The Treaty of Chanyuan

In 1005 the Song and the Khitan Liao concluded a treaty at Chanyuan, on the Yellow River. The Song agreed to annual payments of silver and silk, and the two states then kept the peace for over a hundred years. Historians have read the arrangement both as a costly concession and as a bargain that bought the Song a long period of stability.
