The Cave Temples at Dunhuang

From the fourth century onward, patrons carved and painted hundreds of cave shrines into the cliffs at Dunhuang, on the far western edge of the Chinese world. Merchants, monks and officials travelling the Silk Road paid for the images, and the site preserves paintings and manuscripts in a dozen scripts.
